Roma star Soule lifts lid on playing under Allegri: “He told me I had to cut my hair”

Roma winger Matias Soulé has shed some light on what it was like to play under Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus.

Allegri has had many young talents under his management during his time, but Soule is one of the ones who has blossomed and remained playing at a high level. His name has been in the news in recent days because he has snubbed the Italian national team in favour of Argentina.

Soule made his senior debut at Juventus under Allegri in 2021 but made only 21 appearances under him across three seasons. A loan to Frosinone followed where he became a star, and he was then sold to Roma where Gian Piero Gasperini is enjoying his exploits.

He was briefly linked with Milan in the summer, as part of the Alexis Saelemaekers talks. The winger spoke to Il Messaggero and revealed some details about his relationship with Allegri while at Juventus, including a rather funny anecdote about a haircut. Tribuna relayed his comments.

What was it like under Allegri?

“Allegri always kept me in mind, even though I didn’t play much. He gives you complete freedom in attack, but if you make tactical mistakes, he goes crazy. Di Francesco and Gasperini are similar; they pay maximum attention to defence.”

Did he tell you to cut your hair?

“At Juventus, I had grown my hair long and dyed it blonde. The next day, he told me I had to cut my hair or I might as well not show up anymore. I was young, so after training, I immediately ran to the barber.”
