Romano: Milan can close deal for Athekame ‘somewhere in the middle’ after first bid

Signing a right-back has to be one of the big priorities this summer for AC Milan, and movement is being made.

With a left-back brought in, a right-sided defender is all that is really needed for Milan to have a complete backline. Maybe there can be debates about quality compared to previous targets and players, but there is a certain solidity seen from pre-season that has not been present in a while.

Marc Pubill and Guela Doue have been the leading options for the right-back all summer, and perhaps they may still be pursued. However, it seems the first move to be made will be for Zachary Athekame.

Switzerland to San Siro

Playing for Young Boys in Switzerland, the defender made 43 appearances last season, including a few in the Champions League. Born in 2004, the 20-year-old right back could head South and join the Rossoneri for a small fee.

Today, market expert Fabrizio Romano discussed the situation and the operation’s price via MilanNews.

“Milan are moving forward strongly in their contacts for Zachary Athekame, the Young Boys right-back. The Rossoneri have presented an offer of €7 million, while the Swiss are asking for €10-10.5m. An agreement could be found somewhere in the middle.”
