AC Milan made a late attempt to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli ‘a couple of transfer windows ago’, forcing them to change his contract.

Osimhen’s future was the subject of speculation thoughout the last two windows, Sky even reported that Milan made a late attempt to try and sign him. It was something Zlatan Ibrahimovic personally led, before he ended up moving to Galatasaray on a loan deal, that was turned permanent this year.

In the end Napoli did not have to see their star striker go to a rival, something that appeared a possibility with Juventus also keen. However, they also did something that ensured they don’t have to see it happen in the immediate future either.

Milan’s Osimhen attempt

On his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano gave this behind-the-scenes look at the release clause included in Osimhen’s contract, after he moved from Napoli to Galatasaray in the summer after a very long negotiation.

“Napoli sold him on their terms after a long tug-of-war, also including an anti-Italy clause: it’s a clause that prevents the Turks from selling the player to an Italian club,” he said).

“Why did Napoli want to include this clause? Because Napoli knows that a couple of transfer windows ago, Milan considered Osimhen as a last-minute opportunity, and then Juventus also considered him this summer, but De Laurentiis never wanted to sell the Nigerian striker in Italy, only abroad.

“Therefore, for the next two years, Osimhen cannot be sold to an Italy club. This clause was accepted by the Turks and the player and was a crucial step in the negotiation from day one.
