Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Santiago Gimenez never wanted to leave AC Milan, despite the Roma swap deal rumours.
There were many rumours swirling above Gimenez’s head in the final days of the transfer window, but in the end the Mexican remained at Milan. Above all, there was talk of an exchange with Artem Dovbyk that never ended up materialising.
Gimenez’s father spoke to ClaroSports about the final days of the transfer window and that has added fuel to the idea that there were some disagreements, suggesting that Massimiliano Allegri had to step in to stop him being sold.
‘Didn’t want to leave’
Romano spoke in a video on his YouTube channel and he recapped what happened towards the end of the mercato involving Gimenez and how he really felt about the stories circulating.
“Gimenez was one of the key figures in the final days of the transfer window. First, a firm no to a departure, then an openness to the possibility of wearing the Roma jersey, with the deal ultimately falling through,” he said (via MilanNews).

“It was always a difficult opening. Not out of disrespect for Roma, but because Gimenez didn’t want to leave Milan. He always intended to stay at Milan. He opened the door when he realised Milan had put him on the market, possibly with a deal that ultimately fell through on the final day.
“Gimenez has been sought by Turkish clubs in recent days, but it was never an option for him. Santi made a clear, decisive, and strong choice to stay at Milan. He did so with a public statement. He was never, and I repeat, never, a Chelsea target.
“Santiago Gimenez is more than happy to stay at Milan, he wants to play his best. He made this kind of choice. Milan never reached an agreement with Roma for this loan swap with Dovbyk, between buy-out options, dry loans, the formula…
“In short, there were many obstacles to this double deal, but Santi Gimenez’s desire is certainly very clear. It is to try to have some important months at Milan and not to change his future so quickly.”
