Saelemaekers discusses ‘key moment’ in season, constant use and Milan’s ‘dream’

Alexis Saelemaekers backed up the words of his coach by confirming that the main target for AC Milan this season is just to finish in the top four.

The last couple of games have cast doubts on Milan’s ability to really compete for the Scudetto right until the end, given that they dropped points against the teams that started the rounds in 17th place (Genoa) and 18th place (Fiorentina).

For his part, Massimiliano Allegri has always reiterated that the major objective for Milan in 2025-26 is to get back into the Champions League. While the Rossoneri are currently to course to achieve this, the table remains very compact and there is pressure on to win every game.

On the sidelines of his meet and greet with fans at the official store in Milan’s San Babila stadium, Saelemaekers answered questions from Mediaset regarding the season so far and the hopes for the second half. MilanNews relayed what he had to say.

Is this a key moment in the season?

“Yes, but there have already been other key moments. We’ll see it as usual, applying what the coach has asked of us: obviously the three points are very important, as they will be in two or three months. We have to give our all even if we play every three or four days.”

Don’t you ever feel tired?

“After the games, I’m tired, for sure (laughs). I’m lucky to have a very quick recovery time, and that’s a characteristic of mine that the coach has understood: he knows he can always count on me. I try to apply what he tells me, and he comes to talk to me: for now, it’s going well.”

Is Allegri asking you for goals? You’ve accustomed us to scoring in recent seasons…

“Scoring a goal is the best thing in football, it gives us incredible emotions. The coach, however, isn’t pushing us to do that; he wants us to do our job and do it for us. The attackers can also score goals. Right now, I’m working hard on defending and attacking, getting as many balls to our attackers as possible.”

How are the squad at the moment after two frustrating draws?

“There are always these moments in the season when you can’t perform well: the important thing is that we’ve always seen the reaction, we’ve never given up, no matter what the result. These are moments in the season when it’s important to all be united and work hard: that’s what we do. The results will come.”

Many dream of the Scudetto: what’s the feeling within the group?

“We have a clear objective: to finish in the top four. Whether we’ll finish first, second, third, or fourth will be up for grabs at the end of the season. One thing is clear: we have to work hard every week, every day we have to be better than the player we were yesterday. What will happen in the end, Scudetto or not, is not in our plans right now.”

Would the Scudetto be a dream?

“If you ask any Serie A player their biggest dream, it’s to win the Scudetto. We have to stay calm, organised, and work like we do. But yes, it would be a beautiful dream.”
