San Siro is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world, and its authenticity is clear, thanks to its name. AC Milan and Inter may protect it; maybe they won’t.
The decision to demolish the current stadium and build a new one next door, effectively, is a bold one. Even if it is probably needed, the clubs need to get a new stadium right. We have seen it go well previously, but there are also some terrible attempts at moves.
To strengthen their attempt, the Milanese clubs have entrusted the design process to Norman Foster, a world-renowned architect who also designed the new Wembley, a stadium recognised by millions.
Sala discusses new San Siro name
As much as its design is important, Milan and Inter must also ensure that the name is correct. Whether they will choose to continue at San Siro or decide on a new name, it must be recognisable and equally as liked.
Today, the Mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, spoke to Sportmediaset about the decision, via MilanNews.
“What will the new stadium be called? It’s a choice made by the teams, and it’s clear that naming and sponsorship are not out of the question, as with all European and world stadiums. I’m just expressing my opinion, not as mayor, but as a fan. I’ve never been able to call it the Meazza, out of respect for Meazza. I really like San Siro, but this is precisely my experience.”
Other issues…
“It’s something [the name] I, as mayor, don’t have to say a single word about. We still have work to do; let’s not forget that to get a notarial deed, you have to work. Have I spoken to the clubs? The offices, not me. I spoke to the notary to reassure me that the deed can be completed by November 10th. He told me it can be done, but obviously, we need to work on it.”
