Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala spoke about the investigation into the sale of San Siro over alleged bid-rigging, denying any wrongdoing.

Milan and Inter were able to celebrate the news on Wednesday that they have officially bought San Siro from the City Council. They have done so for a figure of €197m which includes some surrounding land, and it is the first big step forward in the new stadium project.

However, opposition has promptly arrived and it feels certain that the courts will inevitably be involved in the coming months. ANSA reported that the Milan Prosecutor’s Office is investigating bid-rigging.

Promoter Claudio Trotta – one of the founders of the Sì Meazza Committee, a group that are very strongly opposed to the new stadium – was interviewed by prosecutors and claimed he tried to bid for San Siro but was told that he had not done so in time.

Sala was present at the ‘Lombardy at the heart of the Olympic challenge’ event ahead of Milan-Cortina 2026. He was asked by journalists present what he thinking of the news of the investigation.

“We did everything right, we followed the rules. Once we received the teams’ expressions of interest, we held it off for the necessary time. It seems like a very theoretical approach to me. An unusual timing for the news to be released? The very same day is cause for concern,” he said (via MilanPress).
