‘Same situation as the national team’ – Capello uses ‘tree’ analogy to explain Milan’s issues

Fabio Capello is not entirely convinced by the squad that AC Milan have built, but he is in favour of Adriano Galliani’s potential return.

Milan were among the most active clubs during the summer transfer window as they completed over 20 exits in the end and brought in 10 new signings, which certainly feels like a revolution.

Many believe that it was necessary, given that the Rossoneri finished eighth in the league last season. Moreover, the decision to bring back Massimiliano Allegri is further proof of a desire to start a ‘new era’.

‘Same situation’ as Italy

However, it all has to click, and the business done has to be proven right. Capello gave an interview to Corriere della Sera in which he assessed the current state of affairs at Milan, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

“Well, it seems to me that they’re in the same situation as the national team. They have a midfield that doesn’t stop much and defenders who pay a lot of attention to the ball and little attention to their opponents,” he said.

“Not to mention that when they lose the ball, few players return, and they do so slowly. Their objective in the Champions League ? I’d say it’s a minimum, not playing in European competitions.

“A team is like a tree. The trunk is the supporting base: a solid central defender, a midfielder who screens and initiates play, and a striker who scores. I feel like more than one element is missing here, but Max is an intelligent coach and will find a way to fill that gap.”

Among the topics touched upon, Capello was asked about what the potential return of Galliani would mean, given the doubts about how the management have been operating.

“I’m his friend, I’d be happy. But above all, I hope it’s for the good of Milan,” he said.
