AC Milan have solved the issue of Mike Maignan’s immediate future, but they want to resolve his long-term situation too.
Just a few weeks ago, it seemed a near certainty that Maignan would be leaving Milan in order to join Chelsea and to play in the FIFA Club World Cup. However, the Premier League side did not offer what the Rossoneri wanted, and so the deal fell apart.
Igli Tare later said in a press conference with journalists: “Maignan is not leaving, he will be at Milan next season too. There was interest from a Premier League club but in the end an agreement was not reached, knowing that Maignan is a point of reference not only on the pitch but also off it. We decided to focus on him and look forward together.”
Renewal talks planned
For now, therefore, Maignan remains the undisputed number one at Milan. The issue is that he has less than 12 months left on his contract, which is a dangerous situation to be in. The Gianluigi Donnarumma situation showed this, with Magic Mike being his replacement.
Nicolo Schira has tweeted: “Mike Maignan’s contract expires in June 2026, but Max Allegri and Igli Tare consider him a key player for Milan’s project. So in Autumn Milan will re-open talks with his agents to try to extend the contract.”
