The Africa Cup of Nations has entered its decisive phase, with Senegal and Egypt set to clash in Tangier on Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams arrive in the semi-finals boasting similar records, each having won four of their five matches so far. However, the nature of their victories highlights distinct strengths for each side.
Senegal, currently ranked second in Africa behind hosts Morocco, are targeting a third AFCON final appearance in the last four editions as they seek to reclaim their place at the summit of African football. Their campaign has been impressive: two wins and a draw in the group stage were followed by a commanding 3-1 triumph over Sudan in the Round of 16 and a narrow 1-0 victory against Mali in the quarter-finals.
The Lions of Teranga have showcased both attacking flair and defensive resilience, scoring 11 goals in five matches while keeping three clean sheets and conceding just twice. Their recent record against Egypt is also promising, with three wins from their last five meetings—including the pivotal victory that knocked Egypt out of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
On the other hand, Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan will be concerned by his side’s lack of goals against Senegal, having managed just one in their previous five encounters. The Pharaohs, record seven-time AFCON champions, matched Senegal’s group stage results with two wins and a draw, but their performances have left some questions unanswered. They needed a stoppage-time winner to edge Zimbabwe in their opener, relied on a penalty to overcome South Africa, and played out a goalless draw with Angola.
Egypt’s journey through the knockout rounds has been equally challenging. They required extra time to get past Benin in the Round of 16 and narrowly held on for a 3-2 win over Cote d’Ivoire in the quarter-finals, despite once leading 3-1. These narrow escapes point to potential vulnerabilities that Senegal will look to exploit as both sides battle for a place in the final.
