Liverpool may consider a move for Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry, according to a recent report.
The Reds are on the lookout for additions in the wide areas and are keen on Premier League duo Antonie Semenyo and Morgan Rogers, but Gnabry would offer a cheaper alternative. The Bayern star’s contract is set to expire in the summer, meaning he could be available for free.
Reports in German outlet Bild claim Gnabry is on Liverpool and Juventus “shortlists,” with the reigning Premier League champion already making enquiries and evaluating whether a move for the 30-year-old would free up funds elsewhere.
It’s likely that Liverpool will need to sign at least one center-back in the summer, and could be forced to make additions at left-back given Andy Robertson could leave free free, unless he signs a contract extension at Anfield.
As for Gnabry, he remains a vital player for Vincent Kompany at Bayern. The attacker has started seven of the nine Bundesliga matches he has been available for this season, and has provided four goals and three assists.
He would undoubtedly be an asset to Liverpool, and perhaps has unfinished business in the Premier League. Gnabry infamously struggled to hold down a place at Tony Pulis’ West Brom in 2015-16, which prompted him to turn his back on the English game and sign for Werder Bremen.
Gnarby had been on loan at The Hawthorns from parent club Arsenal, and then head coach Arsene Wenger subsequently expressed his regret that the elite talent was not able to showcase his talent in the Premier League.
“Let’s not forget Gnabry, I bought him at the age of 15 from Stuttgart, and he was injured a lot," Wenger said on BeIN Sports, after Bayern secured its place in the 2020 Champions League final.
“He’s creative, he can score goals, right-footed, left-footed, good power, good penetration, very, very clever with the timing of his runs. His tendency was a bit too easy, like I told you about with young, talented players.
“But he has matured a lot, and he is one of the dominant players now in Germany.”
Pushed on why things didn’t work out at Arsenal, Wenger added: “No, no [I didn’t want to let him go].
“We had an agreement with him. I had given him out on loan to West Brom, and he didn’t play a game, came back, he was injured.
“We worked with him very hard for six months, and he went out with the German national team U21s. Bayern made a deal with Bremen, and in the end, he didn’t want to extend the contract [at Arsenal].
“I was very sad that we couldn’t get over the line with him because I knew that he would have a great future. He can play No. 10, he can be a No 9, he is a very intelligent player.”
