The former Milan left-back Serginho has shared his thoughts on the Scudetto race, the growth of Davide Bartesaghi, the potential renewal for Mike Maignan, and more in a recent interview.
Milan have started the season really well and at the time of writing, they are at the top of the Serie A standings, waiting to see what the result of Roma-Napoli will be. In short, they have every right to dream of the Scudetto, especially since they don’t have any European competitions.
Amidst all of this, we have seen some individual brilliance from several players, including Mike Maignan and Davide Bartesaghi. This, along with the Scudetto race and Max Allegri’s impact, is something Serginho was asked about in his interview with MilanNews.
Having won the Scudetto once with the Rossoneri, as well as two Champions League trophies and more, the Brazilian certainly knows a thing or two about the red and black. Judging by his responses, Milan fans can be rather content.
Do you think Milan can win the Scudetto?
“I think the league is still wide open. No team has properly established itself at the team yet. The teams are going through good and bad times, so the league is still balanced in this sense.
“Clearly, Milan are always one of the favourites when they play in a competition, given the importance of the club and the shirt, but we still have a lot of work to do. Some players still need to improve, and some new signings haven’t settled in well yet.”
What do you think of Bartesaghi? How much potential does this boy have?
“It’s great to see young players slowly integrating into the first team like this, he’s a player who has the qualities. He’s obviously very young, but he has proved himself in a tricky derby. He held his ground well, was focused, and wasn’t afraid to face San Siro, which you know is a very difficult stadium.
“Furthermore, he’s replacing one of Milan’s most important players of recent years, Theo Hernandez. But he’s a young player and we need to give him time to improve his skills.”

In your opinion, should Milan renew Maignan’s contract? And if he doesn’t renew, could Milan focus on a younger player, like Torriani?
“I think that when you have a player with the confidence that Maignan has, you have to keep him, because it’s difficult these days to find a player with his quality, his experience, in a group like this.
“A player like him cannot leave Milan, especially on a free transfer; it shouldn’t be possible. I think Milan will make every sacrifice to keep him in the group.”
How important was Max Allegri’s arrival?
“I think that after the failure of the two Portuguese coaches, Max’s arrival has brought back the AC Milan culture. Max is someone who understands the culture and the importance of the Milan shirt.
“It’s important to have an Italian coach who understands not only Italian football, but also the situation that Milan find themselves in today.”
