Serginho has revealed that Thiago Silva had an agreement to join AC Milan’s city rivals Inter, before quickly making another decision.
The Brazilian signed for Milan back in 2009 from Fluminese and he quickly became a fan-favourite, helping win the Scudetto in the 2010-11 season and the Supercoppa Italiana a few months later. However, his stay in Italy would not be as long as the Rossoneri hoped.
Thiago Silva signed for Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth up to €42m, becoming the most expensive defender ever at the time. There, he would win 23 trophies including seven league titles, before moving on to Chelsea where he became a Champions League winner in 2020-21.
The centre-back has been regularly linked with a Milan return, but it is yet to materialise. In an interview given to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Serginho revealed an intriguing background on Thiago Silva, who was actually destined for Milan’s rivals. MilanNews relayed the story.
“I recommended Thiago Silva to Galliani and Braida, and the latter fell in love with him. He already had a pre-contract with Inter, and Villarreal were also interested in the player, but we spoke to him and he chose Milan in five minutes.
“He was won over by the club’s prestige and the idea of developing alongside someone like Nesta. In hindsight, I’d say he did well, with all due respect to his Nerazzurri cousins…”
