Sky journalist claims Milan know they ‘should have done more’ to fix defence

There are certainly different opinions on AC Milan’s summer mercato, and most of them rest on the defensive unit.

Deciding whether Milan had a good summer or a bad one is tough. Unfortunately, it is one where we will probably have to look back in the future, there was a fine line to meet, and it is difficult to say if they did enough just yet.

Nevertheless, the Rossoneri can consider the facts of their business and be largely happy with some things. The midfield has been revamped and looks much better for it, whilst Christopher Nkunku brings another element to the attacking line.

Defensive questions

However, this brings us to the defence, where there are certainly questions. Perhaps on the final day, they could have been solved by a Manuel Akanji or Joe Gomez. Instead, a heavily inexperienced defender arrived from Germany.

This decision has led to Peppe Di Stefano questioning the summer’s business on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube, as MilanNews relays.

“It was a complicated market because they decided to make a revolution: if the squad now consists of 22 players, including 10 new faces, it means the idea wasn’t to perfect what was there but to overhaul the team. When you replace nine out of 19 outfield players, we’re almost down to 50% of the squad.

“After Cremonese, Allegri asked for three additions: a central defender, a Rabiot-style midfielder, and Rabiot arrived, a striker with certain characteristics, and then Nkunku arrived. The only problem is the defence, where something more could and should have been done, but I think the club is the first to know that.”
