Sky: Mateta left ‘devastated, disappointed and upset’ with Milan’s knee fears confirmed

Jean-Phillipe Mateta saw his move to AC Milan collapse on deadline day, and now he is strongly considering surgery on his knee issue.

Mateta was meant to be Milan’s statement winter signing, but everything unravelled over a few hours towards the end of the window. The club sought several opinions from doctors regarding concerns over the Frenchman’s medical, and eventually they pulled the plug on the deal worth over €30m.

Next steps for Mateta

What will Mateta do now his dream move is off? Sky report that he is considering undergoing knee surgery to correct the issue(s) detected. Meanwhile, regarding Milan and Palace, ‘it is thought there is no bad blood between the two clubs after the transfer was called off’.

The Rossoneri directors knew before negotiations started with the London club about the possibility of needing further checks, because his medical records were sent to Italy on Saturday in advance of the final negotiations.

Juventus also considered a deadline day move, but they too were put off by the discovery of a worrying knee issue. It is a problem that he has had since November, and the striker ‘has been playing with pain for several months’.

The 28-year-old will now have ‘discussions with a knee specialist’ before deciding whether to go under the knife. He still holds dreams of being in France’s World Cup squad this summer, which an operation and a few months out could complicate.

Sky Sports News state Mateta ‘is devastated, disappointed and upset after his failed move away from the club in the winter window’. Now, it remains to be seen if Oliver Glasner welcomes him back into the fold, especially after Jorgen Strand Larsen’s arrival for over €50m.
