SM: Maignan not part of Milan squad for friendly against Arsenal – the reason

There was a notable absentee in AC Milan’s friendly defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday as Mike Maignan was not involved at all.

Milan began their 2025 preseason tour with a 1-0 loss against the Premier League side in Singapore. The only goal came early in the second half through Bukayo Saka as he ghosted in to convert a cross from close range.

The Rossoneri would actually go on to win a shootout that took place after the full-time whistle and Lorenzo Torriani emerged as a hero. In addition to making five good stops during the game, he kept out three penalties to ensure Massimiliano Allegri at least had something to smile about.

Why was Maignan missing?

As many fans pointed out, Maignan was not included in the team to face the Gunners, neither the starting XI nor on the bench. We have learned that the goalkeeper is working to regain his fitness and be ready for the next friendly, scheduled for Saturday 26 July against Liverpool.

Maignan seems to have been battling an irritating fitness issue given that when he originally arrived to begin preseason he did mostly work alone in the gym. It is of course best to exercise caution in these situations, especially less than a month from the season starting properly.
