‘So many conversations’ – Thiaw sheds light on chats with Ibrahimovic and Howe

Malick Thiaw has spoken out about his decision to join Newcastle United from AC Milan, as well as his relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Thiaw joined Newcastle from Milan in the summer window for €40m including bonuses, and it felt like the management got a more than adequate fee for a player who had been up and down during his years at the club. However, he has settled into Premier League life well, drawing plenty of praise.

At the time, a report from The Athletic claimed that Massimiliano Allegri was keen to keep the German defender. Yet, Milan have always shown a willingness to negotiate – at least under American ownership – when an offer of a certain magnitude comes in.

Thiaw gave an interview to Sky Deutschland in which he spoke about swapping Italy for England, plus conversations that he has had with Ibrahimovic about his development.

Was Eddie Howe an important factor?

“Definitely. There was already a discussion in the spring but this summer it became much more concrete than in previous years. I also had talks with Eddie Howe, in which he explained his plans for me and where he saw me playing. Based on that, I decided on Newcastle United. I think it was the right decision.”

Did you speak to Zlatan Ibrahimovic often?

“Yes, very often. He’s someone who clearly expresses his opinion and is very clear about what he wants. He also praises you, but he’s more the type who wants to push you to improve. That’s why he had so many conversations with me.”
