Marco Sportiello has issued a farewell message to the AC Milan fans, following his decision to return to Atalanta for the upcoming season.

The goalkeeper’s departure was made official two days ago after what was a fast negotiation, with Milan turning to Pietro Terracciano as the new backup keeper. After two years at the club, Sportiello felt it was time to move on and when he got the chance to return to Atalanta, he didn’t hesitate.

Yesterday, Sportiello issued a farewell message to Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), stating that his Milan tenure brought ‘unforgettable moments’ with it. He also thanked the fans for their constant support, which was evident especially in the hard times.

“Dear Milan, I dedicate these words to you because I want to say thank you. I have experienced unforgettable moments. I thank my teammates, the staff, and the entire club for giving me this opportunity.

“I am also grateful to you, the fans. It was a privilege to be able to play at San Siro and feel all your love and passion for this glorious jersey. With love, Marco Sportiello,” he stated.

As for the transfer fee of the move, it’s believed that Milan got around €1m from Atalanta, which they probably used most of to secure Terracciano. That being said, Mike Maignan will remain the starter and last season, he didn’t miss many games at all due to injury.
