Steven Gerrard has described calls for Arne Slot to be sacked as "absolute nonsense" as he defended the Liverpool head coach.
A vocal minority of supporters on social media have been calling for Slot's head in recent weeks, but despite the team's poor form, he is not under any immediate pressure from FSG or Michael Edwards.
Heading into Saturday's game against Aston Villa in the Premier League, Liverpool had lost six of its previous seven games to drop from first to 10th in the top-flight standings and also crash out of the League Cup.
There were wholesale changes to Liverpool's squad over the summer, and the Reds have also suffered with several injuries since the beginning of the season.
Gerrard believes a combination of factors are contributing to Liverpool's ongoing struggles. He told TNT Sports: "The job he did after taking the reins from Jurgen Klopp was impeccable. He deserves a lot of praise for that. So that's the reason why it (the team's form) has been frustrating the last few weeks.
"People calling for him to be sacked - that's absolute nonsense. But if you make that many changes, in a short space of time, there's going to have to be a transitional period somewhere.
"Then if you add a few injuries into that as well, it is a challenging time, but to be fair to the manager, he's tried to explain these situations in the media, and then people are accusing him of using excuses.
"He's not - he's explaining the reality and the fact of the situation. But what he is saying is he's game for fixing it, he's up for fixing it, and tonight's the first chance he gets to do that."
Slot faced criticism after suggesting that his Liverpool squad lacked depth in the wake of the League Cup defeat by Crystal Palace.
Slot clarified his comments on Liverpool's squad depth in a press conference on Friday morning, saying: “We miss nothing.
"I am completely happy with the team, all the quality that we have and completely convinced with the strategy and the policy we have but the issue is not all of them have had a proper pre-season or have been injured during the season.
