Steven Gerrard saga finally over as decision reached on sensational comeback

2 weeks ago 11

Rangers has confirmed Danny Rohl as the club's new head coach, concluding its hunt for Russell Martin's replacement and ending talk of a sensational return for Steven Gerrard.

The Scottish team dismissed Martin earlier this month following the former Southampton manager's dismal record of just one victory in seven league matches. Speculation surrounding his successor has been intense in the weeks that followed, with Rohl, formerly of Championship team Sheffield Wednesday, initially withdrawing from contention last week.

Liverpool legend Gerrard was even being tipped to make a return to Ibrox, having previously managed the Scottish team between 2018 and 2021. But that dream ended when Gerrard decided against a return for three reasons.

Following the breakdown of discussions with ex-Rangers defender Kevin Muscat over the weekend, the 36-year-old Rohl has now been officially announced as the club's new head coach, penning a deal through to 2027.

Upon confirmation of his appointment, Rohl commented: "It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club, recognized around the world.

"I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

"The expectations here are clear.

"The fans want to see results now - my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way, and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this."

The pursuit of the Ibrox position has featured numerous unexpected developments, with Gerrard appearing destined for a remarkable return to the club he led to glory during the immediate aftermath of Martin's departure.

Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 to halt Celtic's dominance in Scotland.

Since August 2011, every single Scottish Premiership title has been won by Celtic. Only Gerrard's Rangers team has stopped Celtic from clinching the trophy.

Gerrard was named as the Manager of the Year in 2021 by the Scottish Football Writers' Association, the Professional Footballers' Association Scotland, and the Scottish Professional Football League for leading Rangers to glory.

Gerrard would've received a hero's welcome had he returned to Rangers.

However, the Liverpool icon had a last-minute change of mind and withdrew from contention, with Rangers instead engaging in discussions with Rohl and Muscat.
