Steven Gerrard has tipped Paris Saint-Germain to win this season’s Champions League, which Liverpool fans won’t be too happy to hear.

The Reds will face the defending European champions in the quarter-finals next month after knocking out Galatasaray, with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Anfield on Wednesday seeing them bounce back after defeat in Istanbul.

Arne Slot’s side will be eyeing up revenge after being knocked out of last season’s competition by PSG, with Luis Enrique’s team then going on to lift its first European title, having needed penalties at Anfield to eventually overcome the Reds in a tight tie.

The French champions made light work of Chelsea in the last-16, putting eight past the Blues across both legs as they breezed through to the quarter-finals, and unfortunately for Liverpool, Gerrard can’t see his old side stopping them either.

Analyzing the performances of the English teams in the Champions League last-16, Gerrard told TNT Sports: “A couple of teams had really difficult games.

“Newcastle against Barcelona, very much the underdogs, middle of the Premier League, they’re not having a fantastic season, so that was no surprise. Maybe the scoreline, yes, but not in terms of the outcome of the game.

“Same for Chelsea. PSG are the favorites for me, I think they’ll go on and win the competition. Liverpool play them next which is going to be really tough from a Liverpool perspective.”

Gerrard added: “So, a few surprises in terms of scorelines. I expected Spurs to go out in the form they’re in, I think they’ve got to focus more on survival in the Premier League.

“I think in terms of Manchester City, they lost their tie in the first game. Losing 3-0 away in the Bernabeu was a shock result for me, and they had a right good go in the second leg, but to do it with 10 men was virtually impossible.”

Despite Gerrard feeling that the Reds’ European run might come to an end soon, he was encouraged to see his old side improve greatly against Galatasaray after the disappointment of the 1-1 draw with Tottenham just a few days earlier.

“Miles better,” he said on Liverpool’s midweek performance. “I think you saw the two sides of Liverpool within the week.

“The Spurs performance was miles off, very flat, not good enough out of possession, dropping points at home against a team that have really been struggling, so that was a big surprise. But the performance wasn’t because there’s been too many of them this season.

“But then Wednesday night, the crowd, the atmosphere, the buzz before a ball was kicked, it just felt different, and Liverpool had to come out and put in a completely different performance, and they did from start to finish. They were excellent.”
