Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has admitted his “sadness” over watching the final moments of Mohamed Salah’s career at Anfield.

Salah, 33, announced that he will be leaving the Reds at the end of this season. It will draw the curtain on a legendary stint at Anfield. Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 from AS Roma for around $45 million. He has fired himself into contention as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, scoring over 250 goals and providing more than 120 assists across all competitions.

Salah helped the team win major honors, including two Premier Leagues, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. However, since Arne Slot’s arrival, it has at times appeared that Salah and the manager have not seen eye to eye.

Salah has also endured one of his worst Premier League goal-scoring seasons, with just five in 22 games.

He will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, marking the end of an era, but Salah’s final stage of his Reds career has left legendary former captain Gerrard feeling “sad.”

“In terms of the sadness, I'm feeling that more than you, let me tell you, in terms of watching him [Salah] individually and collectively, because they've come so far away from the team identity - what they've set, in terms of standards, for the past years,” Gerrard told Ally McCoist, who also said similar about watching Salah now.

“They've been so high collectively, and Mo Salah's been at the forefront of that. They've set such high standards; to come so far away from that, it's very noticeable. Let me tell you right now, Ally, you're not feeling as sad as me right now."

Following Saturday’s FA Cup quarterfinal demolition at the hands of Manchester City, a top-four finish and potential Champions League glory are still up for grabs for Liverpool. However, the Reds play Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals.

Still, Gerrard says the Reds could galvanize their campaign - starting against the French giants. “I think they've got an opportunity this week to try and galvanize something from the season,” Gerrard said.

“So far, I think the players have admitted it, the manager's admitted it, it hasn't been good enough.

"But they've still got a chance this week — and it's a huge week, on the back of a really poor performance against Manchester City.

"They've got to stand up and be counted, individually and collectively.

"They've got to stick together, and they've got to try and grasp the opportunity of putting pressure on the likes of Aston Villa and (Manchester) United from a league point of view with the Fulham game, which is arguably just as important as the two Champions League games.”

"They've just got to go and give it everything they've got against this PSG team, and try and take the game to Anfield next week,” he continued.

"Use the crowd and try and galvanise something from the season because, if the week goes the other way, and they don't do that and they don't try and galvanise something from the season, unfortunately, the pressure, the heat, the intensity is going to come even more on the players, and certainly on Arne Slot as well - which, from a fan point of view, I don't want to see."
