‘Still need 64 points’ – Allegri focused on one goal despite beating Scudetto favourites

Massimiliano Allegri is staying grounded, despite the fact that his AC Milan team swept aside a Napoli team that are favourites for the Scudetto.

A lot has changed in the past few weeks at Milan, and this is solely due to the results that have been seen on the pitch. Since the opening day, the Rossoneri have not dropped points; they have scored 11 goals, only conceding one in that time too, last night’s penalty.

Any fears of a hangover have been quickly alleviated, with the Diavolo looking solid at both ends of the pitch, with players still returning. For example, last night was Rafael Leao’s first game of the Serie A season.

Allegri remains grounded

Despite all the positivity around him, though, Allegri is remaining grounded. Speaking at his press conference last night, he refused to be dragged into any Scudetto ambitions. Instead, reiterating his message of the club’s aims, as MilanNews relayed.

What kind of game was it?

“Now they’re sensing the right amount of danger. The first half was technically solid on both sides, then in the second half the penalty put us down to 10 men, but we defended very well, we were very good. Whoever came on helped. It was an important test, against a really strong Napoli.”

How is the team doing?

This team has some very good players with technical ability. Leao is still lagging behind in his fitness; in fact, he played too much, partly due to the demands of the match. We have good alternatives. The important thing is that everyone has a common goal: to play in the Champions League next year. Now, let’s enjoy the victory, but then we’ll get back to work tomorrow.”

“No, it’s not special, because I have to prepare for the match. It will definitely be a game where I’ll feel emotional; I spent eight years there.”

Would you say again that Napoli is the number one favourite?

“Absolutely yes, especially since they’re the Scudetto holders. We have to work step by step to improve. Our two young players, Bartesaghi and Atekhame, will grow a lot: the club has provided me with international-calibre players who help the younger ones.”

Does the team have different eyes?

“I’ve found a group of guys who are eager to work hard, who know full well that the goal is to return to the Champions League. We still need 64 points to get there, so we need to take it slowly, calmly, savouring the victory, but without getting too excited.”

Is AC Milan no longer a mystery? Is there increasing responsibility?

“When you play for Milan, you inevitably have responsibility. Our goal is to get to March and give ourselves a chance.”
