Tare reveals he ‘made a pact’ with Maignan and lifts lid on deciding to sign Modric

Igli Tare has revealed that he and AC Milan made a pact with Mike Maignan regarding his future, and also spoke about what guided the signing of Luka Modric.

Milan go into the Saturday night showdown against Lazio at San Siro knowing that they would go top with a win, at least for the time being ahead of Roma’s game against Napoli. It will not be an easy task though, against a Lazio side that have rebounded well after a difficult start to the campaign.

Massimiliano Allegri has opted to make just one change to the starting XI that won the derby on Sunday night, and it is a forced one. Christian Pulisic misses out due to a minor muscle issue, and his place in the front two has been taken by Christopher Nkunku.

The sporting director Tare spoke to Sky moments before kick-off at San Siro and he was asked about Maignan’s renewal as well as the signing of Luka Modric. MilanNews transcribed his words.

What are the emotions for you, given you have Lazio in your heart?

“It’s been almost two decades at Lazio, wonderful years. I carry with me fantastic memories, we won and we celebrated so much. It will always remain a part of my heart: so many years lived well. I’m very excited, but as soon as the match starts I’ll be rooting for Milan.”

It’s been the week of Maignan – what is the club’s position on the renewal?

“Mike is fine, he’s as we thought he could be: he’s having a great season together. We made a pact at the start of the season, we’re moving forward without putting pressure on each other. There’s a calm atmosphere, today we’re focusing on the game and then we’ll see how things go.”

How did you come up with the idea of ​​signing Modric?

“We analysed last season at length. We tried to bring in players with great personality who could make a significant impact on the team. His impact was devastating, even for us. A wonderful discovery, but knowing him personally, as a man and a professional, it’s no surprise.

“He rejoices like a child and prepares every match obsessively. I hope he can play with us again. He has an option for another year, but we’re still together and will decide his path with great peace of mind.”
