Ahead of the game between AC Milan and Fiorentina, Fatih Terim spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport, having coached both clubs in the past.
The well-known Turkish manager coached Fiorentina during the 2000-01 season, but was let go before it came to an end. Then, for the 2001-02 season, he was appointed as the new head coach of Milan but also ended up leaving that job earlier than expected.
Speaking to today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, seeing as the two clubs will face each other tomorrow, Terim shared his thoughts on the clash. Among other things, he stated that the Rossoneri are right to think about the Scudetto, even if it’s still early.
Terim, do you like the look Allegri’s new Milan?
“Yes, and I’m not surprised. Allegri is a great coach, it’s normal that he’s bringing the Rossoneri back to the top after a season below expectations.”
Some think he could even aim for the Scudetto…
“And what’s the news? Milan must always aim to win. It would be an anomaly if no one believed in the Scudetto. However, it’s still early, I think the candidates are the usual ones: besides Milan, there are Inter and the reigning champions Napoli, but also Roma and Juventus.”
But only Allegri has Modric. Did you expect him to still be so fit at 40?
“Luka is one of the greatest footballers of the modern era, a living legend. I’m not surprised he’s still making a difference. Compared to the past, players today have the tools to extend their careers, taking care of every detail and living like true professionals. In this sense, I believe Modric is a leading example.”

Speaking of Fiorentina, Stefano Pioli isn’t doing so well: zero wins in the league and the fans are whispering…
“I know Florence and the Viola fans; they have an immense passion for their team and suffer when things go badly. But I know that Pioli and Fiorentina have the quality to get out of this difficult moment. In fact, I’m sure they will do so soon.”
Will it be tough tomorrow at San Siro, even if AC Milan will be missing Pulisic and Rabiot?
“These absences are significant, but Allegri is fortunate to coach a great team, with players capable of filling the gap.”
Pioli, however, hopes to recover Kean…
“A striker I really like, essential for Fiorentina.”
On the other hand, Leao should be seen again from the start for Milan…
“Great news. I’m a fan of Leao, he has extraordinary qualities and, whatever anyone might think, he also knows how to play for the team.”
Tell us the truth, will you be cheering for Milan or Fiorentina this time?
“I really don’t know how to answer this question. I’m being honest. I’ll definitely watch the match on TV with interest: I think it could be an entertaining match and, hopefully, a hard-fought one right to the end.
“I want to send a big hug to all the Milan and Fiorentina fans, as well as to the readers of Gazzetta. I still have a great affection for Italy; it is and always will be my second home.”
It remains to be seen if Stefano Pioli, the former Milan coach, will last longer than what Terim did with La Viola. It would certainly be typical for him to clinch his first win of the season against the Rossoneri, but this is something Allegri will want to avoid at all costs.
