Ruud Gullit does not believe that his former club AC Milan can challenge for the Scudetto all the way until the end.
Milan are currently 10 games unbeaten in the league, but they have drawn four of them. The last two games showcase the up-and-down nature of the team well: a 1-0 win in a top of the table clash against Roma, followed by a 2-2 draw versus Parma in which a two-goal lead was surrendered.
Nevertheless, the Rossoneri remain two points off top and they face Inter in the derby after the international break, knowing that they can go above them with a win. Roma and Napoli are also right up there in the mix, in what has been an entertaining start to the 2025-26 campaign.
In an interview with VideoGamer (via MilanNews), Gullit spoke about the Rossoneri’s new direction under Massimiliano Allegri and whether they can in fact compete for the league title right until the very end.
Can Milan become champions?
“I don’t know if they can do it. There are many teams that aren’t at their best right now. Inter have done very well in recent years. Juventus are also struggling. And the same goes for Roma: there are several teams in difficulty. Napoli have done well, but recently lost in Holland against PSV.
“It’s a bit of a strange period in Italy. However, I think Italian teams still know how to play good football. As for Milan, furthermore, there are new people in charge, and that doesn’t help. They will have different ideas about the players, so it’s still a project. Maybe we’ll have to wait a bit to see what happens.”

Which Italian team can go the furthest in the Champions League?
“Inter did very well in the last competition, and they were also very consistent. In my opinion, they’re the only team with a chance. Juventus were also a powerhouse, but they’re struggling right now.
“Milan and Roma were also there for a long time. But it all depends on how much money these teams can spend. The Premier League is at the top right now, so everyone goes there.”
Zirkzee was linked to AC Milan in the past…
“I think he should have stayed in Italy, he was really committed. He was doing very well at Bologna, and I hoped he would go to AC Milan. I think going to Manchester United was the wrong decision…”
