‘The adrenaline is always there’ – Barella previews derby and praises Inter boss Chivu

Nicolo Barella has admitted that experience helps him take on derbies with more calm, but the thrill of San Siro remains on those nights.

Chivu’s Inter have had a brilliant start to the season, finding themselves second in Serie A but with a chance to retake top spot this evening with a victory in the derby. They have also won four games out of four in the Champions League, playing a very entertaining brand of football based on high pressing.

By contrast, Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan have made pragmatism their speciality, especially in the games against rivals at the top like Napoli and Roma. The dropped points have come against ‘lesser’ sides, which is an intriguing paradox, but tonight they can go above Inter in the table.

Barella gave an interview to Inter’s official matchday programme in which he previewed the derby and spoke about the new head coach Cristian Chivu, with SempreInter relaying his words.

What has it been like working with Chivu?

“I immediately appreciated his humanity in understanding our situation at first. As well as his strength and desire to make us think about the future. That really impressed me. I believe his greatest quality is the empathy he has with the players. He’s someone you can deeply respect but also always discuss things with.”

What personal progress have you made?

“I’ve always been very determined. When I was younger, that grit helped me stand out and make my way. Compared to a few years ago, today – thanks to the experience I’ve gained over the years – I’ve developed awareness.

“I play with the same enthusiasm but more serenity, and that makes me proud of the journey I’ve taken.”

What qualities would you like to ‘steal’ from your team-mates?

“I would take many things from many teammates. From Acerbi, his mentality, his will to never give up, and to always stay focused. From Thuram, his smile, his zest for life, and his ability to spread joy. And from Calha, his shooting… and I could go on.”

What motivates you ahead of games like the derby?

“Experience helps you play with more calmness and awareness, but the adrenaline is always there. When you enter San Siro and already during warm-up hear the decibels rising, that’s something that always gives you goosebumps.”
