Massimiliano Allegri seemed to send a message to the AC Milan management regarding the future of Mike Maignan, after his performance against Como.
Milan came from behind against Cesc Fabregas’ side to win 3-1 on Thursday night, with Christopher Nkunku equalising from the penalty spot before a second-half brace from Adrien Rabiot. It was as pragmatic a performance as they come, and Mike Maignan’s saves played a big part.
After speaking to DAZN, Allegri went and spoke to Sky as well to give some more thoughts on the victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. Towards the end of the interview he was asked about the importance of Maignan, with MilanNews relaying his words.
Different euphoria, different celebrations, is it a different match?
“It’s an important victory because playing against Como is difficult because they play with the ball, they have good players, especially when you’re behind you risk capitulating.
“Today Maignan kept us in the game after their first goal. We wanted to go for the ball high up the pitch, but their goalkeeper did a good job of catching us in open play with a few well-placed through balls.
“Once we got back on track, we played better, also because they dropped off in the 60th minute and started making more mistakes. In the first half, we were too open and that’s when you struggle, even Luka inevitably struggles more.”

You sent a message to Inter and those below…
“No message, we have to focus on ourselves, we’re missing a lot of points. I think finishing in the top four would be a great result. We need to keep quiet, keep pedaling, not talk and focus.”
How important was Maignan?
“If there are players who cost €100m and players who cost €1m, there’s a reason. You have to keep strong players on the pitch. It’s right that Milan have great players alongside young, less experienced players who are used to playing to win, which is different.”
Where’s Leao best?
“Leao is a player who becomes decisive, like on Sunday against Genoa, after not having a great game. Tonight he had two wonderful flashes of brilliance, you have to exploit his characteristics, hoping he’ll win the match. He changes positions very little, he has to understand the open spaces to occupy.”
A positive update
As mentioned, Maignan produced arguably his best performance of the season in Como last night, though there are some other strong contenders like the games against Roma and Inter.
Gianluca Di Marzio told Sky after the game that his renewal seems to be just a matter of time. The goalkeeper has an agreement in principle, and now the only thing to be resolved is the final details.
