Former Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara is set to return to Anfield to play for the Liverpool Legends team against Borussia Dortmund next month.

Thiago, now 34, retired from playing professional soccer two years ago and is set to feature for the first time in the charity event, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 28. That is in the middle of the international break, when the Liverpool first team doesn't have a fixture.

After spending four seasons with Liverpool, making 98 appearances in total, Thiago decided to hang up his boots. He had long struggled with injuries, but was magical for the Reds, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.

Known for his flair and remarkable passing ability, he was a key man as the Reds won the FA Cup and League Cup double in 2021/22, narrowly missing out on the Premier League and the Champions League.

In addition to Thiago, the Liverpool Legends team will also involve Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Martin Skrtel, Vladimir Smicer, Natasha Dowie, and goalkeepers Jerzy Dudek, Pepe Reina, and Sander Westerveld.

Reds legend Jurgen Klopp, the man who signed Thiago for Liverpool, is also returning for the first time. He is the LFC Foundation's honorary ambassador and will be in the Anfield dugout once again to assist Kenny Dalglish.

They will be joined by LFC ambassador and the Reds' all-time record goalscorer Ian Rush, plus Forever Reds chair and club legend John Aldridge.

All of the proceeds from the fixture will go directly towards the work of LFC Foundation and Forever Reds. In previous editions, Liverpool has taken on the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Liverpool Legends beat Chelsea in their last game, with Ryan Babel scoring the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge in October.

In March of last year, Peter Crouch scored a brace as Liverpool beat the West London side at Anfield.

Crouch performed his trademark robot celebration in front of The Kop after netting a looping header. He grabbed a deft second soon after to make it a perfect return to Merseyside.

"Honestly, I can’t keep the smile off my face," Crouch said after the game. "I was just hoping to get through the game, to be honest. It’s so nice to get a couple of goals.

"I’m genuinely really pleased because you just never think you’ll even get the opportunity to play at Anfield again. To score two at The Kop End, I’m so happy."
