The hot topic around Tottenham’s latest defeat is Cristian Romero, who was sent off against Man United on Saturday afternoon.
That red card was very much a turning point in the game at Old Trafford, with Spurs going a goal down less than ten minutes later.
Thomas Frank’s men eventually conceded again to record a 2-0 defeat. That leaves the Lilywhites still searching for their first league win of 2026.
Romero will now miss four games, including key matches against Newcastle and Arsenal. But he’s got the backing of his manager and his teammates, it seems.

Thomas Frank on Cristian Romero’s latest Tottenham problem
Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle (07/02/26 14:50), Spurs boss Frank discussed Cristian Romero’s latest indiscretion and appeared to suggest he’s not blaming the skipper for what happened.
He said: “Cristian, first and foremost, there is no intention to do the follow-through and get a red. He clearly goes for the ball. Unfortunately, the way the rules are, it becomes a red. Cristian apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room.
“It is, but it is what it is. We need to deal with it. I think a big area we’ve been working hard on is the resilience. We didn’t get the result out of it today, but what they showed out there on the pitch today, the players, was incredible. We need to focus on Newcastle on Tuesday night.”

Guglielmo Vicario has his say on Romero
Meanwhile, Guglielmo Vicario admitted this kind of incident comes with the territory of how Romero plays the game, and backed his captain to learn from the experience.
“He is disappointed because he knows this red card could have been avoided so he apologised,” Vicario said. “He is our captain and today he made a mistake but we know the player he is and he is going to come back stronger and help us massively throughout the season.”
There’s a good chance the job of captain will fall to Vicario now for the next four games, unless Frank gives the armband to Micky van de Ven instead.
