Thomas Frank ‘has no idea’ if Cristian Romero will still be at Tottenham next season

Thomas Frank has been asked about Cristian Romero’s Tottenham future following the Argentine’s latest outburst on social media.

Romero is no stranger to publicly expressing his displeasure with the Tottenham hierarchy, and the centre-back controversially appeared to do so again on transfer deadline day.

The Spurs captain termed it ‘disgraceful’ that Tottenham had only eleven fit players available against Man City, which many saw as a dig at the club for failing to sign more players in January.

Thomas Frank has suggested that Romero’s comments have been dealt with internally at the club, and the Dane has now elaborated further on the centre-back’s latest outburst.

Thomas Frank has ‘no idea’ about Cristian Romero’s Tottenham future

Over recent days, reports from Argentina have claimed that the World Cup winner has made up his mind to leave Spurs at the end of the season.

When asked if he still expects Romero to be at the club next season, Frank has now told Football.London: “That’s a question I have no idea about. Right now, he is the captain, he has a long-term contract, and we signed a new contract with him.”

The Dane also suggested that, irrespective of any player’s feelings towards the club’s decisions, they are expected to do a job on the pitch, which he insisted that his captain has done admirably.

Frank added: “As long as everyone does their job, then it is fair enough. I am pretty sure there are also some players who don’t think I am the best bloke or whatever it is, but as long as they work hard and do everything they can on the pitch, then I am happy.

“Is the feeling better if everyone is aligned and happy and likes each other? Probably. But it is all about the performances on the pitch. In general, in his time here, the ones I have been in charge of, [Romero] has been exceptional. I think he has had some unbelievably big games for us, not only defensively, but he has also scored some crucial goals.”

Frank admits there are lines one cannot cross

Over the last few days, Romero has come in for plenty of criticism in the media for being a repeat offender, and Frank acknowledged that no matter how important a player is, there are always lines one cannot cross.

However, the 52-year-old made it clear that he has no doubts about the Argentine defender’s leadership qualities.

The Spurs boss added: “I think there is, in general, over time, there is always one line you cannot cross. For any player, for me, for any staff members, for anyone.

“Leadership is many things. I’m 52 years old. I think I’m pretty good at leadership. Can I get better every single day? Yes. Do I make mistakes? Maybe not every single day, but probably weekly. Romero is 27 years old. Is he still going to make mistakes going forward as a leader? Yes. Does he do a lot of good things? Yes.”
