Thomas Frank hints Tottenham will not repeat 2018/19 mistake under Mauricio Pochettino

Thomas Frank has made an interesting comment about the importance of adding more talent to the Tottenham squad in the upcoming transfer windows.

Since the exit of Daniel Levy, the Lewis family have repeatedly reiterated that they want to usher in a new era of on-pitch success.

Earlier this month, Spurs confirmed that their majority owners had injected £100m into the club, and the supporters are hoping that that money will add to the club’s transfer kitty in January.

We have already heard several sources say over the last couple of months that ENIC are set to change Tottenham’s transfer policy and target elite signings.

Thomas Franks says spending money alone will not bring success to Tottenham

The Tottenham boss acknowledged that the squad needs to be continuously reinforced in order for the club to go toe-to-toe with the best sides in the Premier League and in Europe.

That will be music to the ears of Spurs fans who will remember when the club went 18 months without a single signing in the 2018/19 season under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, he pointed out that success does not only depend on the quality of the squad, but also on intangibles such as building the right culture at the club.

Frank told Football.London: “It’s up to us to try to shorten that distance as much as possible but of course, it’s evident the more money you use on the squad, the better the chance of success.

“But it’s not 100 per cent sure. Can we nail the culture, the way we want to play, how we develop the players and the team, make even more togetherness? Then we’ll be able to get a little bit closer.

“It is the same here [as it was at Brentford], but if you’re at the top as well, it’s the same in that sense. It’s always about out-performing what you have to work with.”

Frank says Spurs cannot have too big a squad

The benefits of having a bigger squad than last season are already evident at Tottenham this term. The Lilywhites currently have double-digit injury absentees, but those injuries have not been as acutely felt as it was last campaign.

Frank explained that while it is imperative to have a large squad, he pointed out that the squad can get too big, which would be far from ideal.

When asked if Tottenham need a larger squad to cope with the injury crisis, the Spurs boss responded: “I don’t know the exact number of players you need to have enough depth. I think you need to have enough robust depth in the squad, so for example, I don’t think it’s the right answer to have 30 players, that’s way too many, for us to go extreme.

“Probably not right to have 18 either. You need to have that perfect number where everyone has a chance, and we can also use everyone, that’s it, and then plus you’re not too short.”
