Thomas Frank reveals why he is happy with Tottenham’s performance against Newcastle

Thomas Frank has said that he was pleased with Tottenham’s performance at St James’ Park, even though his side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

Frank made a few changes to his line-up for the clash at Newcastle United, but that did not come as a surprise, particularly given that Tottenham’s injuries are now piling up very quickly.

In the end, the depleted Spurs side that stepped out onto the field could not get the job done, with a headed goal in either half from two crosses being enough to see the home side emerge 2-0 winners.

Despite their huffing and puffing, Tottenham failed to create too many clear-cut chances, which has been a pattern for much of the season, but the Spurs head coach was encouraged by what he saw from his side in the North East.

Thomas Frank encouraged by Tottenham’s offensive performance

Even though the Lilywhites failed to find the back of the net, Frank felt that they played some good football going forward.

The 52-year-old suggested that it was only the timing of the final runs into the box or the weight of the balls into the area that his side did not get right at Newcastle.

When asked what he thought of Tottenham’s performance, Frank said (via Football.London): “I think it was a very even game. I think it was small margins that decided it. I think our performance was good. I think the way we played the game, especially how we built it from behind, phase one, especially phase two, I think we controlled the game much more.

“I think we had some short connections in the middle of the pitch. I think we found Lucas and Xavi in good positions. So I think it was one of our better offensive performances for the season. You could say it was not like we created five hundred per cent chances, but we created some really big chances.

“I think Ramsdale had some really good saves. And then I think we had six, seven very good moments where with Richarlison arriving half a second too late, the final pass could have had even more cutting-edge quality to have created even more.

“Overall, I’m happy with the performance. Of course, I’m super disappointed that we lost. And I’m super disappointed that we’re out. We would love to progress and be in the draw tonight.”

Carabao Cup elimination may be a blessing in disguise for Spurs

Ahead of the game, Thomas Frank had said that Tottenham want to win the Carabao Cup this season.

However, Tottenham’s fixture list is extremely crowded over the next couple of months, and given the club’s bloated injury list, elimination from the Carabao Cup may not be bad news.

It might slightly improve Spurs’ chances of making it into the knockout stages of the Champions League and maintaining their position at the top end of the Premier League.
