Thomas Frank has indicated that Heung-min Son could still be the Tottenham Hotspur captain next season, but he should offer the position to his other contender.
Heung-min Son has been the captain of Spurs for the past two seasons. There is no question he has been immense for the club, but the decision made by Ange Postecoglou was initially a surprising one.
Whether you want to argue that Son should or should not be captain moving forward, he should always be celebrated as one of the greatest to wear the armband after lifting that historic European trophy.
The skipper of both his club and country may have been one of the best players to ever grace the pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but he does not always come across as the loudest leader in games.
Indeed, some Spurs supporters have been frustrated by Son’s post-match interviews. There often appears to be talk of improving without action, although that was just anonymous with Tottenham’s Premier League campaign last season.
Despite this, Thomas Frank confirmed Son was set to wear the captain’s armband when Tottenham play Reading. However, current vice-captain Cristian Romero was also given a chance to act as captain during one half of the pre-season fixture.
Cristian Romero should be the new Tottenham captain
Romero has already proven he knows how to lead Tottenham. The Argentine wore the captain’s armband in the Europa League final, and he led by example. Spurs kept a clean sheet and defeated Manchester United thanks to a strong defensive performance.
Not only is Romero a top player, with impressive achievements on an international level, but he is not afraid to say things as he sees them. Romero posted a cryptic dig at the Tottenham board when Postecoglou was sacked, and this was not the first time he scrutinised those making the decisions at Spurs.
A good leader accepts nothing but the best, and this is exactly what Romero will offer. He has grown in maturity and smoothed out the rough elements in his game since joining Tottenham.
However, the defender must show he has no desire to leave North London any time soon; otherwise, giving him the captaincy is a non-starter.
It does not make sense for Thomas Frank to name Heung-min Son as his Spurs captain
Son is now 33 and his contract expires next summer. Unless he ups his game compared with last season, it is difficult to see him being rewarded with a new deal.
Frank is contracted to Tottenham Hotspur for the next three years, and it would be wise for him to choose someone who will be at the club for the duration of his tenure.
Selecting a player who is a nailed-on starter is also important, and this might not be the case with Son. In fact, you could even make the same argument for James Maddison, while having a goalkeeper (Gugilemo Vicario) as captain always feels limiting.
However, Romero is highly unlikely to be knocked out of the Tottenham starting lineup; therefore, he is now the better option to take the lead on the pitch.
