Thomas Tuchel has outlined why Trent Alexander-Arnold was omitted from his England squad for this month's friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Following his exclusion, the former Liverpool star, who is now at Real Madrid, posted on social media: "Real Madrid and nothing else."

The England manager was asked about Alexander-Arnold's post and responded: "As a response to not being nominated? Well fair enough, fair enough. I think it was a very hard decision we made. No doubt about his talents, no doubt about his career and what he can give to teams. We created a slightly different game model when he was not in camp in September, October, November.

"It was a game model built on intensity, built on positivity, built even like in the profile of the full-back, on overlaps, on underlaps, very intense, so it was a slightly different profile of players.

"We just stick to these guys, and I know it's on his back, and he was with us in June.

"Maybe he deserved a second chance. It is a very hard difficult decision, I'm aware of it, but he took it on his chin."

Tuchel then promised: "We will keep on going, and I will make sure I will see some matches from Real Madrid and maybe a Champions League match live to get my last impressions.

"He's on the long list, and everyone is still in the mix, but at the moment, some other guys are just ahead."

The 27-year-old attracted attention after being omitted from Tuchel's 35-man England squad, with Tino Livramento and Djed Spence preferred.

The former Liverpool right-back hasn't represented England since last June during World Cup qualifying matches.

Following his recovery from an ankle problem, Alexander-Arnold featured for 26 minutes in England's slender 1-0 victory against Andorra, before remaining on the bench without coming on in the subsequent game — a 3-1 friendly loss to Senegal.

After missing international selection, he was relegated to the substitutes' bench by Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa following his late arrival to a team meeting prior to the derby clash with city neighbours Atletico Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold's campaign has been hampered by multiple injuries, with his adaptation to life in the Spanish capital continually disrupted by ongoing fitness problems.

England is scheduled to play two fixtures this month, followed by a final warm-up match against Costa Rica shortly before the World Cup kicks off. Tuchel hasn't entirely dismissed the possibility of bringing Alexander-Arnold back into the squad for the tournament.
