Tottenham could do with Leeds star to fix midfield leadership issue - Tim Sherwood

Tim Sherwood has suggested that one Leeds man’s leadership qualities could have come in handy for Tottenham amidst their relegation battle.

Concerningly for Spurs, many of their relegation rivals have picked up crucial points over recent weeks and moved to relative safety.

Tottenham are now extremely unlikely to catch Leeds, who have registered back-to-back wins over Wolves and Man United to move eight points clear of Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Nottingham Forest have also given themselves some breathing space in the relegation battle, with the Lilywhites looking big favourites to join Burnley and Wolves in the Championship next term.

Tim Sherwood claims Tottenham could have made do with Ethan Ampadu

Sherwood has admitted that at the start of the season, he did not think many Leeds players were good enough to improve Tottenham’s startling eleven.

However, the former Spurs midfielder and interim head coach believes that someone like Ethan Ampadu could have come in very handy for the North Londoners in their battle for survival.

Speaking after Leeds’ 3-0 win over Wolves, Sherwood told Sky Sports: ”Looking through their group of players, at the beginning of the season, would Tottenham have taken many of them, and I would have said no but in hindsight now when you look at it, you look at someone like Ethan Ampadu, he’s not only a good player, he’s a very, very good player, but he’s also a leader.

“He’s someone who wants to stand up, he’s not old but he’s got a lot of experience and he drives his teammates forward and that is what you need in this situation, you need someone willing to stand up and pull others in the correct direction with you and that’s what Ethan Ampadu has done, he’s not alone but he is dragging them to safety in this league.”

Spurs want to sign experienced Leeds star

Reports over recent weeks have indicated that Tottenham are looking to sign Karl Darlow on a free transfer this summer as the goalkeeper nears the end of his contract at Elland Road.

The 35-year-old has been one of the standout performers for the Yorkshire club over recent months, having overtaken Lucas Perri as Leeds’ number one.

Following his side’s win over Wolves, Daniel Farke singled out the Tottenham target for praise, and it remains to be seen if the Wales international’s recent performances persuade Leeds to offer him a new deal.
