Tottenham could raid Liverpool to address main transfer priority after injury setback

1 week ago 23

Tottenham is on the hunt for a number 10 and an experienced center-back in the transfer window to strengthen Thomas Frank's squad, with a raid on Liverpool very much possible before the transfer window shuts.

Europa League winners Spurs have already secured the signatures of winger Mohammed Kudus and defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha this window from West Ham and Bayern Munich respectively, with the latter joining on loan with an option to buy. Son Heung-min has also confirmed he will depart.

The need for another attacking midfielder became evident even before James Maddison's knee injury on Sunday in Seoul, which occurred in the same knee that necessitated three months of rehabilitation earlier this year.

There have been links to Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, who has made no secret of his desire to get regular football, with the arrival of Florian Wirtz likely limiting his opportunities further.

Previously, Spurs had tried to lure Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest, but the deal fell through, resulting in the 25-year-old renewing his contract with the Midlands club despite showing interest in a move to north London.

Tottenham is confident it will have the necessary funds to execute their summer transfer plans, with Frank prioritising both a central attacking playmaker and an experienced centre-back to enhance the Dane's defensive options.

Naturally, with any transfer window, unexpected opportunities can crop up in the market in various positions during the final weeks.

However, the primary need for a center-back arises from Spurs' first-choice center-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both having missed significant periods due to injury over the past two seasons.

Speaking during the club's pre-season tour of the Far East, Elliott made another admission over his future.

He said: "If I had my way, I’d be at Liverpool for the rest of my career. I love everything about the club. But at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what’s best for me.

"I have big ambitions. I want to go to the World Cup. It’s still something I need to review

"We have had many new players come in, whether that blocks the path for me, I don't know. It is something I need to decide. My main focus is here, unless anything changes."

West Ham is thought to be considering the midfielder, with boss Graham Potter believed to be an admirer, while Newcastle, Brentford and Wolves have all been linked.
