Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has landed himself in hot water off the pitch, with the Argentine handed a six-month driving ban after a speeding offence involving his £200,000 Lamborghini.

Cristian Romero has been the centre of transfer speculation this summer, with Atletico Madrid reported to be keen on signing the 27-year-old defender.

Tottenham, however, are determined to keep hold of Romero, with Daniel Levy prepared to make the Argentine the club’s highest-paid player should he agree to a new contract with the north London side.

It was reported a few days ago that Atletico Madrid is preparing an all-out bid for Romero. A bid that Tottenham fans have widely mocked, dismissing it as anything but “all-out”, with many supporters pointing to the substantial fee they believe the Spanish club would need to stump up.

Cristian Romero handed driving ban after North Circular speeding offence

Regardless, the Argentine international remains in the headlines, though this time the news is unrelated to football matters. According to the Standard, Romero has received a six-month driving ban following a speeding offence in his Lamborghini.

The report claims the Tottenham defender was caught by a speed camera on the North Circular last December, travelling in a £200,000 Lamborghini, where he was clocked exceeding the speed limit.

It is understood that this is not Romero’s first such offence, with this latest incident adding to a series of previous traffic violations. These accumulated breaches reportedly left the 27-year-old in line for an automatic driving disqualification.

It has been revealed that Romero who earns £165,000 a week was travelling at 60 miles per hour in a zone restricted to 50 miles per hour, on a stretch of the A406 in North Finchley.

The Argentine defender is said to have pleaded guilty to the speeding charge and has reportedly been ordered to pay a £1,000 fine, £100 in costs, and a £400 victim surcharge.

Romero’s ban is understood to have begun last week and is set to expire on Boxing Day – just in time for Tottenham’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace.
