Tottenham urged to replace Igor Tudor with the last name you would ever expect

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy to make a shock managerial decision rather than hiring Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi is expected to soon finalise an agreement to become the Spurs head coach, and the Italian will certainly have a huge mess to sort out if the deal does go through.

Tottenham CEO Vinai Venkatesham and the senior members of the club’s leadership will be hoping that the 46-year-old’s arrival can galvanise the squad after their Igor Tudor experiment blew up in their faces.

The Croat ended up lasting just 44 days at N17, making Tudor’s stint at Spurs one of the shortest-ever across Premier League history.

Martin Keown tells Tottenham to re-hire Thomas Frank

Keown believes that Thomas Frank has been vindicated by the events of the last month and a half after his replacement picked up just one point in his five Premier League games in charge of the club.

The Arsenal legend insisted that Tottenham were playing better under the former Brentford boss than they did under Tudor, and suggested that Spurs would be better off bringing the Dane back to the club.

Keown told talkSPORT: “I’m not sure they enjoyed it when the last manager came in, he was quite scathing of the group. Maybe it’s an arm around the shoulder a little bit here? It certainly didn’t work last time.

“Look… I know people say you should never go back, but Thomas Frank might be allowed back in the building to actually say, ‘Okay, let’s try and pick up where we left off’. I know that they lost a few games, but it was certainly a lot better than we saw from recent games.”

Can Tudor and Spurs be a happy marriage against all odds?

It can be argued that what Tottenham need more than anything is a unifying figure, who has a good connection with the fans, but the club have instead decided to go for a disrputer in De Zerbi.

The fact that Spurs are willing to offer De Zerbi a lucrative five-year contract tells you that the Lilywhites are about the Italian’s fit for the role.

The former Brighton boss has not been able to stay and build a long-term project anywhere in his managerial career so far, while every project Tottenham have started for the past seven years has ended prematurely.

One would not bet against this marriage also eventually coming apart, but Spurs fans will be hoping that the 46-year-old’s arrival could at least lift the squad enough to escape relegation.
