The Tottenham teenager had an impressive debut in the Champions League and was not afraid of letting one Dortmund player have a piece of his mind

Tottenham starlet Jun'ai Byfield has made it clear that he was only doing what his parents told him when he shouted back at one Borussia Dortmund player.

It was a proud moment for the 17-year-old and the north London club when in the 62nd minute of the 2-0 Champions League win against the German side, the young centre-back Byfield stepped on to the pitch to make his debut. With 13 Spurs players out, Byfield had to come on at right-back with Pedro Porro moving into a midfield role.

In the driving rain, Byfield was calm and assured in his half an hour on the pitch and earned praise from head coach Thomas Frank and his senior team-mates.

During one moment the teenager could be seen shouting back at Dortmund substitute Julian Ryerson and not giving an inch after the 28-year-old aimed a verbal volley at the youngster.

"My parents told me not to be afraid of anyone and there was a moment in the game where one of them gave me some stick, I gave it right back to him. Just don't be afraid of people," Byfield said in his club interview after the game.

The youngster was ready to come on when needed and knew he would have a part to play for Frank and the team.

"It was just an amazing moment for me and my family. It's a moment I've worked hard for my whole life and it's finally come and I'm grateful," he said.

"I got told either left side centre-back or right-back, so I was just prepared to do both really. I knew quite early that I was going to come on. I was quite confident and got told a couple of times about my role before the game. So just mentally preparing, just doing the right things, drinking a lot of water so I didn't get cramped or anything.

"It's important that you prepare, even if you don't know you're going to come on. Just obviously preparing right, sleep well, eat well, those are the main things."

Kevin Danso played a key role in guiding Byfield throughout his half hour on the pitch and the Austria international has taken on that job in training as well.

"He's been brilliant with me the whole time I've been with the first team," said the teenager. "I just knew going into the game he was going to help me and he was really good with me today."
