As if Manchester City's Champions League exit wasn't enough, Trent Alexander-Arnold added insult to injury.

The England full-back was filmed appearing to taunt opponent Jeremy Doku after the final whistle, sparking a varied response on social media. Real Madrid booked its place in the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory at the Etihad on Tuesday. A brace from Vinicius Jr. sealed a 5-1 aggregate win, sending City home early.

The match was made all the more straightforward when Bernardo Silva received his marching orders just 20 minutes in. Real then comfortably dispatched Pep Guardiola's side to progress to the next round.

Alexander-Arnold seemed unfazed by Doku's attempts to outmanoeuvre him down the wing. The ex-Liverpool ace was only bypassed once during the second leg, aided by Real's strategy of doubling and even tripling its defensive efforts on that side.

Considering Doku's past successes against him, Alexander-Arnold can be pleased with this statistic. On this occasion, the bragging rights were firmly in Alexander-Arnold's court. The 27-year-old was visibly basking in his triumph as he chatted with a teammate at the final whistle.

What exactly Alexander-Arnold said remains a mystery, but his body language suggested he was mocking Doku. After all, Doku's distinctive attacking style, replete with countless feints and swift shoulder dips, is hard to miss.

However, not everyone concurred that the Englishman had earned the right to gloat, given the history between the two players.

More than one fan noted online that Doku shattered a decade-long Premier League record by dribbling past the Liverpudlian over 10 times during their 2023 encounter.

"The audacity to clown someone who made you the most dribbled player in Premier League history in one game is actually crazy," read one comment on a post showcasing Alexander Arnold's mockery.

Another supporter penned: "Doku must be living rent-free in Trent's head."

Some argued that the scoreline didn't necessarily reflect the nature of their duel, with a third observer noting: "This would have made sense if Doku didn't create four chances from his wing, including the chance that led to the [Erling] Haaland goal."

City's trophy ambitions have been shattered within just a matter of days.

A 1-1 stalemate at West Ham on Saturday left Guardiola's players trailing Premier League leader Arsenal by nine points, while their European exit means Sunday's Carabao Cup final and the FA Cup now represent their sole genuine opportunities for silverware.

Real, by contrast, sits four points adrift of Barcelona at the summit of La Liga and will confront a challenging Champions League quarterfinal, most probably against Bayern Munich.

Alexander-Arnold can only hope his counterpart displays greater modesty in triumph than he did, should Los Blancos fall short of lifting the trophy.
