Trent Alexander-Arnold hit with further setback after Thomas Tuchel decision

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham did not have the opportunity to catch the eye of national team boss Thomas Tuchel in person on Tuesday.

It's believed Tuchel and his assistant, Anthony Barry, did not attend Anfield to watch Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League. Alexis Mac Allister's goal was enough to give the Reds victory against Alexander-Arnold's new team on Merseyside.

It was a rough night for Alexander-Arnold, who was loudly booed at Anfield after running down his Liverpool contract to force a move to the Spanish capital. The defender's mural on Merseyside was also defaced during the hours leading up to kick-off.

Tuchel is scheduled to announce his squad for England's concluding World Cup qualifiers this Friday. England welcomes Serbia on November 13 before making the trip to Albania for their final fixture, although the team has already secured its place in North America.

Bellingham, who shone during the Euro 2024 final campaign under Gareth Southgate, featured in the opening three qualifiers under Tuchel. However, he was absent from September's matches due to injury and was subsequently omitted from the October squad.

Alexander-Arnold also missed the September and October internationals.

Ahead of Tuesday's game, The Telegraph reported that Tuchel and Barry would not be present at Anfield barring a late alteration to their schedule. The same source suggested the duo may still monitor Bellingham's performance remotely.

Bellingham was asked after the game if he expects to be included in Tuchel's November squad. "It's not my call," he replied. "I think you know whose call it is."

The midfielder was then asked if he would like to make the squad. He replied: "I would love to be but it's not my call. I'll be waiting to see."

In October, Tuchel revealed his intention to discuss Bellingham's short-term international commitments with Bellingham. "Of course, he's an important player, he's a big player," the manager said.

"I will speak to a lot of players, also to the guys that will get a text from me who were not in camp. Because these guys who are now here, they have the reward, and they feel the reward. And it's now necessary also that I stay in touch with the other guys."

He continued: “No one has done anything wrong. It's not a punishment or whatever. And I feel when I text them and I speak to them, that everyone is eager to come back. And this is how it has to be. And I trust in more players than are here.

“We always speak about the same names, but we have Conor Gallagher, we have Trevoh Chalobah, and we have Cole Palmer injured. So there are a lot of guys out there who would deserve to be with them, and who are hungry and determined to be with us. It has to be like that.

“But I don't doubt, if we invite them, then we are sure that they will buy in. Otherwise, we will not invite them. Why would we? This is a non-negotiable.
