Before the season began, a few doubted what AC Milan would be able to do without Theo Hernandez. However, the flanks look as good as ever.
When Theo left, Milan were left without a recognised pair of full-backs. A seemingly inevitable situation, but it required some thought. So, Pervis Estupinan and Zachary Athekame were signed to help.
However, it has not been them to star.
Keys to Allegri’s team
Davide Bartesaghi and Alexis Saelemaekers have, potentially, been the duo of the season thus far. The wing-backs have been essential to big wins, and neither looks uncomfortable, despite not being naturals there.
Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes how the Rossoneri have experienced a ‘renaissance’ this season, and the duo have been key to it. The Belgian returned and Massimiliano Allegri requested that he be kept, considering him a starter.
Alert defensively and aggressive on the front foot, the former winger looks to have finally matured and found his space. A renewal is in the works, and it is impossible not to consider him a key player right now.
On his opposite flank, Bartesaghi has remained patient and impressed when the chance arose. He is not Theo, but he needn’t be. Solid defensively and with a high ceiling, he is honest and aware that he cannot coast.
Proof that the Futuro system can help, it is difficult to see him being displaced in the near future.
