A common thread unites AC Milan and Inter with Sunday’s derby approaching: both are in the market for a new goalkeeper.
As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) report this morning, barring any sensational surprises Milan will be without Mike Maignan and Inter will be without Yann Sommer. Both are on contracts that expire next June, with no signs of a renewal.
Negotiations over Maignan’s extension have been stalled for some time and don’t seem likely to restart, so everything points to his departure at the end of this season.
Possible heirs
The two Milanese clubs are evaluating several potential goalkeepers, starting with Cagliari’s Elia Caprile. They signed him from Napoli last year for €8m, and the Italian now valued at at least triple that after a great start to the season.
Another player that intrigues both Milan and Inter is Noah Atubolu, a 23-year-old German shot-stopper currently plying his trade at SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga. His cost is ‘capped’ in a way: he has a release clause of less than €20m.

New names could emerge as well, like Illan Meslier of Leeds United, whose contract expires in June 2026. The former Lorient player has lost his starting spot with the Premier League side club, who would like to sell him in January to secure a small profit and avoid losing him for free.
Milan and Inter don’t need a new goalkeeper this season, but they have already inquired about the situation of the Frenchman, who shares the same agent as Christopher Nkunku (Pini Zahavi)
