Some AC Milan fans and analysts have been left perplexed by the penalty that Inter were awarded against Napoli last night.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan went down inside the box with just over 20 minutes to go in the eventual 2-2 draw at San Siro last night, with Hakan Calhanoglu scoring to put Inter 2-1 up before Scott McTominay equalised 10 minutes later.
As has been pointed out by social media and by SportMediaset’s referee pundit Graziano Cesari (via Telesport), there are some inconsistencies to be ironed out. Why? Leo Ostigard was not punished for a possible stamp on Niclas Füllkrug in Milan 1-1 Genoa.
Cesari explained to ‘Pressing’: “The referee Doveri had not initially seen the touch on Mkhitaryan by Rrahmani, but after the VAR call, after 18 seconds the final decision was made. The touch of the Kosovar defender, after the midfielder’s kick, was obvious, and the penalty was correct.
“This situation is codified and globally accepted, like the Pavlovic-Thuram case in the derby. If it is not applied, like the Gila vs. Conceiçao case, it is considered a mistake by the referee Rocchi.
He also said: “Ostigard’s left foot hit Fullkrug’s left foot. These challenges are absolutely unfair, and therefore deserve punishment.”
