Marco Verratti has revealed that he is rooting for AC Milan in the Scudetto race, having always had a soft spot for the club.

Verratti continues to follow Serie A, albeit from afar. The Italian midfielder is now playing for Al Duhail in Qatar and despite his roots he has never played a single minute in the Italian top flight, even if there have been previous links.

He played in Serie B for the club he came through the academy at, Pescara, and in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain. He has made it obvious in the past that he still closely watches things in his home country, and has never ruled out a spell back in Italy.

‘I’m rooting for Milan’

In an interview with Sky Sport Insider, Verratti revealed that he is supporting Milan this season, partly thanks to his friend Zlatan Ibrahimovic and partly because of his sympathy towards the club. Calciomercato.com relayed his comments.

Do you still follow Serie A? Who will win the league?

“Yes, I always follow Serie A. As for the squad, I think Inter is the most complete team. But this year there’s Milan, who can do well without trophies. I don’t know why, but this year I’m rooting for Milan. I know that my friend Zlatan Ibrahimovic cares about us, and Milan is a team I’ve always liked.”

Could you come back to Italy?

“Anything is possible in football, we’ll see. For now, I’m here, I’ll finish this year, and then we’ll see. I’m not closing doors on anything, but I like to live in the present and not think too much about the future. We’ll see at the end of the year what I want to do and what my family wants to do.”

Could it be Pescara?

“Pescara is my team, it’s everything to me. Meanwhile, I hope Pescara can return to Serie A one day, then we’ll see… definitely playing with the team you grew up with in the top flight is a dream for all the boys.”
