The former Liverpool midfielder continues to be motioned as a possible Arne Slot replacement, but his name was back among the headlines for very different reasons this week

Xabi Alonso is the name on the lips of many Liverpool supporters as the pressure continues to build on Arne Slot following Saturday’s dismal 4-0 loss at Manchester City.
The former midfielder remains with a job following being fired by Real Madrid in January, and Liverpool fans gave Alonso their backing by chanting his name as they left the Etihad.
It seems many want the 44-year-old to replace Slot, and his brief spell in Madrid has not impacted their perception of Alonso’s managerial capabilities. The ex-Bayer Leverkusen coach struggled to deal with the player power in the Real dressing room, a problem that was particularly evident in his dealings with Vinicius Jr.

Things threatened to boil over in October, when Vinicius reacted furiously after being replaced in the 72nd of the Clasico win over Barcelona.
The 25-year-old apologized afterward but has not publicly spoken about the incident until this week.

The winger was selected for media duty ahead of Real’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, and was asked about that infamous exchange.
“It wasn’t a nice moment,” he conceded. “I apologized to everyone. I like to play every game and I didn’t come off in any of them.
“Later, with a clear head, you can understand that you made a mistake. I’m young and every day is a new experience where you can improve.”
Expanding on his relationship with Alonso, Vinicius said: “I played matches, but not many minutes. But every coach has their methods and I didn’t connect with him the way he wanted.

“But it was a learning experience and I hope I can continue with [Alvaro] Arbeloa, with whom I have a wonderful connection and who has always given me confidence.”
Under Arbeloa, who replaced Alonso, Vinicius’ performances have markedly improved. He has provided 17 goal contributions in as many games under the former right-back, including five goals and four assists in six Champions League matches.
“I’ve had a special connection with Arbeloa, just like I did with Ancelotti. He’s always made it clear what he wants from me. I’ve always given my best, and I’m going to keep doing so,” said Real’s no.7
“I don’t think I’ve ever gone this long without scoring a goal. I’ve learned from this rough patch, and I want to keep learning. The best players always bounce back.”
