Virgil van Dijk has admitted he was disappointed Liverpool failed to keep a clean sheet once again despite putting in a dominant display against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
The Reds recorded a superb 5-1 win in Germany to end the club’s four-game losing streak. A much-needed moral-boosting performance was delivered by Arne Slot’s side in comfortably its best display of the season so far.
Hugo Ekitike, back at the Deutsche Bank Park for the first time since his summer move to Liverpool, got the ball rolling for the visitors when he slotted the ball into the back of the net, before Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate capitalized on some weak defending to head in from corners at the end of the first half.
Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai got their names on the scoresheet after the break to bring Liverpool’s tally up to five, with the only disappointment being Rasmus Kristensen’s strike after 26 minutes that handed Frankfurt an early lead.
Again, it was a goal conceded in slightly chaotic circumstances on the break, and Van Dijk was asked after the game how he felt about that “small negative”.
“Listen, we try to keep clean sheets and keep working so hard and in football, obviously, you can concede goals,” the Liverpool captain told TNT Sports.
“Unfortunately, today it happened, but it's about how you react and in the end, it's about winning games, improving and every day try to be better than the day before.
“It sounds maybe cliche, but that's the only thing we have in our mind and we should have in minds.
“And don't get dragged into all the negatives. Things that are going around at the moment. We want to perform, we want to improve, and that's the aim we have.”
Typically cool and relaxed, Van Dijk downplayed the significance of Liverpool's run of defeats coming to an end, claiming he was never too concerned by the sequence of results.
“I don't think there's relief. Obviously, we were all disappointed with losing games. It was a positive that it didn't happen, at least in my time, I think losing four in a row.
“So obviously that's something you have to then deal with as a group. Stick together, block the outside noise, and keep working.
“Today we won, that's it, we got three points on the board, and now we recover and have to be ready for brunch.”
