Andre's late goal at Molineux was a sickener for Liverpool, as the Reds lost yet another Premier League game in injury time — and Virgil van Dijk was particularly angry with the late blow at Molineux

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk appeared to direct his fury at Rio Ngumoha after Wolves scored a late winner at Molineux on Tuesday.

Wolves won 2-1 courtesy of an injury-time strike from Andre, the fifth time this season Liverpool has lost a Premier League match via a goal in added-on time. The midfielder netted via a scruffy, deflected shot, which came following Liverpool’s sloppy play out from the back.

Alisson’s weak clearance was pounced upon by Andre, who was not tracked and allowed to shoot from just outside the box. That certainly drew Van Dijk's ire. The Liverpool captain seemed to direct his frustration toward Ngumoha, who was in the Brazilian’s vicinity but failed to track back.

“You see Virgil van Dijk’s reaction here. He’s so furious with Ngumoha,” noted Leon Osman on Premier League Production commentary duty from Molineux, after Van Dijk made his thoughts clear

“I think, the effort or not being able to get a bit closer and put Andre under a bit more pressure when he initially lifted it and took the ball.”

In truth, it was difficult to tell whether Van Dijk had unloaded at Ngumoha or Federico Chiesa, who was also close to Andre and did not work back.

Either way, it was a sickening late blow at Molineux. “Conceding goals is always frustrating,” Van Dijk told TNT Sports.

“Obviously we've come on the back of a couple of clean sheets [before West Ham]. I think defensively we have been very solid.

“But it is what it is and we have to move quickly on because we come back here in a couple of days and we want to do well in the FA Cup. We have to show a reaction.”

And despite Van Dijk’s disappointment with Ngumoha, Steven Gerrard has called for the winger to start Liverpool’s next game after he made another offensive impact off the bench.

"He has to start Ngumoha now,” said the former midfielder. “He’s doing more in a small space of time than [Cody] Gakpo is doing in 60 minutes.

Liverpool’s defeat means it missed the chance to draw level on points with Manchester United and Aston Villa in the race for the Champions League places.

Both are in action on Wednesday, with the latter hosting sixth-place Chelsea.

A win for the Blues would see them overtake Liverpool in the Premier League table.
