Virgil van Dijk had a heartwarming reunion with a former rival of his after Liverpool’s win over Real Madrid, with the Reds’ captain showing his class during a TV interview.
The Dutch international led his side to a deserved 1-0 victory over the 15-time European champions, with Alexis Mac Allister’s second half header proving enough to earn Liverpool a second win in just four days following its recent slump in form.
Van Dijk and his fellow defenders were back to their best as they shut out a side boasting Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham, while it proved to be a night to forget for Trent Alexander-Arnold on his return to Anfield.
The Liverpool captain was a busy man after the game as he underwent his media duties, including an awkward meeting with Wayne Rooney following a war of words with the former Manchester United star.
But there was another interview that proved to be much more wholesome, with Van Dijk having an unexpected reunion with former Legia Warsaw and Wolves forward Michal Zyro.
Zyro is actually a year younger than Van Dijk, but was forced to retire from playing last year due to a series of injuries, some of which plagued his time in England.
The pair faced each other back in 2014, when Van Dijk’s Celtic took on Zyro’s Legia in a Champions League qualifier. The Polish side would win both legs, with Zyro scoring and assisting in each game, although it would be Celtic that went through after it was found that an unregistered player had been fielded in the second leg in Glasgow.
“This game, I definitely remember because the atmosphere there was incredible. I remember that everyone was wearing white - I think it was 2-2?”

When Zyro pointed out that Legia had in fact won the first leg 4-1, Van Dijk responded: “I remember only the atmosphere was very good.
“You played there? And now you become a pundit? Well it’s good to see you.”
Zyro would go on to tell Van Dijk that he scored twice during the tie, before telling the Liverpool captain: “I’m really happy to see you.”
Van Dijk responded: “So you scored two goals back then and now you interview me.”
Zyro explained: “Yeah, because I joined Wolverhampton for the next two to three years and I got really bad injury there by the knee,” to which Van Dijk said: “Sorry to hear.”
Zyro replied: “But I really enjoy being here and it’s really special to speak with you.”
Van Dijk responded: “As long as you are happy that’s the most important thing. So keep doing what you’re doing,” before shaking hands with Zyro.
